Your first appointment with a new medical practice is an opportunity to share your health goals, ask questions, and start building a relationship with your care team. A little preparation can help make the experience more comfortable.
Gather the essentials
When you call to make an appointment, ask what paperwork and identification the office needs. Many practices request a photo ID, insurance information, current medication list, and relevant records from other clinicians.
Make a simple question list
Think about what matters most to you. You may want to discuss changes you've noticed in your day-to-day health, preventive visits, medication questions, or ongoing health goals. Write your questions down so they're easy to remember.
Ask about forms in advance
Completing paperwork before your visit can make check-in easier. Our Patient Resources page is being prepared for downloadable forms; call the office if you need a form sooner.
Consider bringing a trusted person
If it makes you more comfortable, ask whether a family member or friend can attend the visit with you. A support person may help you remember questions or instructions, but you should feel free to speak for yourself.
Take your time
If something isn't clear during your appointment, ask for a simpler explanation. Your care is a partnership, and it's okay to request written instructions or a recap of your next steps.
